From Pines to Yuccas – An Adventure Bike Ride into Pioneer Town

If you ride bikes of any sort, then you need to become aware of the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation and the Big Bear Cycling Association. These are two great resources if you’re planning a bike trip to Big Bear Lake, and I highly recommend you take the time to visit www.bigbearcycling.com and www.bigbeartrails.com before you make the drive up the mountain. You’ll find everything you need to know about cycling both on the road and on the trails, including trail info, race dates and where to shop when you’re in need of supplies or service.

There are numerous group rides planned throughout the season. In fact, we had 22 riders show up last weekend for the annual Pioneertown run. Some of us started at the airport and others rode down from near Onyx summit to meet us at the intersection of Pioneertown Rd. and 2N01 (US Forest Service fire road).

From there we all braved the steep downhill littered with baby head sized rocks and the long flat power sapping sand washes to get to our favorite Pioneertown grub spot and watering hole, Pappy and Harriets. We made it down and placed our orders just as the sun set and a live band jammed some nice blues during dinner, making a great ending to a super fun ride. Thanks to all from the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation for planning the event and making sure that we all got a shuttle back after our post ride feast!
